TEMA (Teaching Multilingually through Art) is the continuation of VietABLL (Arts-based Language Learning in Việt Nam) – a project based on teacher activity groups (TAGs) working together to share knowledge and creative practices. TEMA is a year-long collaboration that focuses on the development and implementation of innovative arts-based and cultural resources for English classrooms in Việt Nam.

The project initially kicked off with a training programme hosted by Thái Nguyên University of Education with teacher- facilitators. The facilitators  will be coordinating monthly TAGs online, in three provinces (Quảng Ninh, Tuyên Quang, Thái Nguyên in Việt Nam) with teachers at the lower secondary level. The two-day programme on August 22nd-23rd 2024 introduced the frameworks of the project, its creative and innovative objectives and engaged the facilitators in a series of arts-based activities to activate knowledge and new practice. The project team also met with representatives of three museums collaborating on the project: Quảng Ninh Museum, Cultural Museum of Vietnam Ethnic Minority Groups (Thái Nguyên), and Tuyên Quang Museum. The museums will play a critical role sharing artifacts and activities to enrich the English classroom curriculum. The museums will also serve key links between classrooms and the wider communities, planning to integrate some of the activities within their own offer of educational activities for young people and their families.

On September 29th 2024, an online buzzing webinar officially launched the project. This event brought together two research teams from the University of Glasgow (Dr. Lavinia Hirsu, Dr. Dobrochna Futro, and Mar Sanchez), Thái Nguyên University of Education (Nguyễn Thị Hồng Minh, Ôn Thị Mỹ Linh, Nguyễn Thanh Bình, Nguyễn Thị Hồng Chuyên, Phạm Thị Kiều Oanh, Ngô Thị Bích Ngọc) and Nguyễn Ngọc Ánh, representatives of three Departments of Education and Training in Quảng Ninh, Tuyên Quang, Thái Nguyên, 65 facilitators, 3 museums, and 563 teachers. The meeting was opened by Assoc. Prof. Mai Xuan Truong, Rector of Thái Nguyên University of Education and welcomed Davide Guarini Gilmartin, Senior Academic Manager for British Council in Việt Nam.

Resources for teachers and language educators will be made available at the project website:
