Doctoral researcher Kirsten Somerville from the School of Education has been named the winner of the University of Glasgow Visualise Your Thesis 2024 competition, challenging postgraduate researchers to present their research in a 60-second video explainer.

Kirsten’s PhD project explores the 'origin stories' of modern debates in geographical and environmental education. Reflecting on her experience, Kirsten said,

Visualise Your Thesis challenges postgraduate researchers to communicate their research in a one-minute video explainer. The University of Glasgow offers training through the Researcher Development programme, and I jumped at the chance to learn new skills in visual and digital literacy. My PhD research is very text-based – I’m analysing how educators have written about using literature and creative writing in their teaching practice – so it was challenging at first to come up with ways of presenting it visually. Thankfully, the experienced filmmakers leading the training helped me to think differently about my research, and I really enjoyed the creative process of visual storytelling while developing my video.

Her entry is now live and will be competing in the #TrendingOnVYT competition, running from 16th to 22nd October. You can view and support her entry here.
