Webinar on Livestock Microbiota

Date & Time: 28th May 2024, 1pm

Join us to hear two talks by Dr Laura Glendinning (Chancellor's Fellow at the University of Edinburgh) and Dr Mick Watson (Principal Scientist at dsm-firmenich) with a focus on livestock microbiota.

Dr Laura Glendinning: Understanding the role of microbial flora in chickens

Microbial flora (microbiota) play a vital role in their animal hosts. In chickens these microbes are particularly important in nutrition, welfare, and disease resistance. My group researches the microbiota in both commercial chicken breeds and in smallholder chickens. By improving our understanding of the chicken gut microbiota, we can develop treatments that enhance the ability of the bird to resist disease and that improve feed digestion. We can also develop new methods to improve the sustainability of poultry farming, enabling birds to thrive on more eco-friendly diets.

Dr Mick Watson: Data-driven innovation in the food system

The global food system is responsible for feeding every human on the planet, and currently suffers a number of challenges, including climate change, global inequity, and changing consumer needs. Innovation in the food system has been key to meeting the global demand for food, and I will present some data-driven innovations from academia and industry which ae helping drive the food system of tomorrow.

We host a series of online webinars every 6 weeks to showcase the depth and breadth of work relevant to the alliance. Webinars are held either during the working day at 1pm, or in the evening, at 7pm. Each webinar will feature two speakers presenting for ~20 minutes, followed by a discussion and Q&A.

We are looking for speakers! Whilst we aim for a research and innovation focus, we would like to feature the work across sectors and disciplines within the broader topic of food. Early career members are particularly encouraged to come forward.
