The COVID-19 pandemic has presented formidable challenges for the engineering industry, highlighting potential implications for its future growth and long-term sustainability. To navigate this uncertainty and position themselves for success, engineers must take proactive steps to develop the skills that will be essential in the coming years. This Upskilling course is designed to help engineering professionals do just that, by providing instruction and training in a wide range of critical areas. The modern engineer must possess an array of technical, management and communication skills to address the demands of new engineering challenges. Throughout this course, learners will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge, sharpen their technical abilities, and position themselves to play a key role in shaping the future of engineering.

This course aims to help engineers to become more valuable assets to their organisations, and more capable of driving innovation, efficiency, and progress in the industry.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Write computer programs to control embedded processors in realistic engineering scenarios;
  • Compare current machine learning approaches and design and test code for a simple machine learning algorithm;
  • Apply a systematic design process to the development of a robotic or autonomous system;
  • Evaluate the worth of AR/VR techniques in solving specific real-world engineering problems;
  • Understand the key aspects of modern engineering project management standards and use these in projects;
  • Use various technologies to produce cutting-edge solutions to next-generation engineering projects;
  • Comply with professional and ethical industry workplace standards.

Course structure

This course is designed to equip learners with the tools and knowledge to identify gaps in the engineering market and bring innovation to the industry through the creation of new technologies and improvement of existing systems. It will cover the following topics: 

Week 1: Programming for Engineering I

Week 2: Programming for Engineering II

Week 3: Embedded Systems

Week 4: Robotics & Autonomous Systems I

Week 5: Robotics & Autonomous Systems II

Week 6: Virtual Reality

Week 7: Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning I

Week 8: Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning II

Week 9: Engineering Project Management

Week 10: Professional & Ethical Standards in the Workplace

Assessment

  • Summative Assessment (100%) (optional)

Learners will individually write a computer program and develop an object detection system using machine learning techniques. Due in Week 12.

Learners who choose to submit this assessment will be awarded 10 Academic Credits towards a relevant Undergraduate degree at the University of Glasgow.

Entry requirements

It is suggested that learners on this course are educated to Undergraduate level and have an IELTS equivalent of 6.5. Learners will not be asked to prove their academic or professional history.
