Deportation and State Violence
4.30pm, Room 916, Adam Smith Building

Since 2007, the number of deportations from the UK has exceeded 100,000. Reports by NGOs and monitors, together with research conducted by a number of scholars in transit and deporting countries, have documented some of the physical violence meted out to people by state officials and private contractors employed by the state in the course of deportations. This paper argues that such violence is the inevitable outcome of the institutional violence enshrined in migration systems more generally, systems that perpetuate discrimination and racism and dehumanize migrants.
