This lecture, scheduled a week after Americans in 15 States vote in the Super Tuesday primaries, will assess the state of the US Presidential election contest. 12 March marks the day that Donald Trump could lock in the number of delegates needed to secure the Republican Party nomination. And with almost no opposition, there is little doubt – at this stage – that Joe Biden will be the Democratic nominee. With potentially one of the longest presidential campaigns in living memory, what can we expect as we look to a distant election day on 5 November? Professor Carman will argue the campaign is likely to be nasty and brutish – but definitely not short.
