Kirsty Annand and Scott Smith from the University of Glasgow’s MCMP group took part in the Research Frontiers: Water Innovation challenge led by Targeting Innovation – a university wide challenge for postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers across all disciplines to devise, develop and pitch an innovative idea relating to one of the major water issues the world is facing right now.

Researchers from across all Glasgow universities formed 10 teams and were mentored and judged by experts from industry, charitable organisations, government and universities. Kirsty and Scott’s winning idea was to tackle the challenge surrounding water wastage in the home. They developed an educational programme for schools, highlighting a number of small, practical and easy to implement changes which can be performed around the home in order to minimise water wastage. They also devised a wider programme aimed at bringing the issues of water wastage to the forefront of the public eye as a means of changing policy surrounding water use, and waste.
