Biography

Olivia is a mixed methods researcher at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit. She is a member of the health inequalities team, working across a range of projects including evaluations of complex public health interventions and studies exploring the socio-economic determinants of health.

Olivia is currently working with the PHIRST Fusion team on an evaluation of a suicide prevention programme. The team takes an evaluability assessment approach, working with a range of stakeholders to co-develop approaches to measuring and evaluating impact.

Previously, Olivia worked as part of the team delivering an NIHR development grant exploring options for radical reform of the Scottish welfare system. She ran deliberative workshops with a range of public and stakeholder groups to better understand the complex relationship between income supplementation and health, with the aim of informing policy simulation modelling.

In this role, Olivia also analysed longitudinal cohort data and linked administrative datasets as part of the National Core Studies - a programme of research established to inform the COVID-19 pandemic response.

Olivia has a diverse research background; before joining the SPHSU in August 2021, she gained her PhD in Translational Neuroscience at The University of Edinburgh (supported by the Wellcome Trust). Her thesis aimed to advance current understanding of the cognitive changes associated with cerebrovascular dysfunction in older age, specifically those associated with cerebral small vessel disease, a disease that causes approximately 20% of strokes worldwide and contributes to all major forms of dementia.

Previously, Olivia completed a BA in English Language at Cardiff University, before gaining an MSc in Language Sciences (with specialisation in Linguistics with Neuroscience) at University College London. Prior to starting her PhD, Olivia worked as a research assistant on the MARQUE project, carrying out structured interviews to investigate the quality of life of people with dementia living in care homes and implementing a staff training intervention for the management of agitation in residents with dementia.
