Shared parental leave was introduced in 2015 to give parents more flexibility in managing child care during the first year after birth or adoption, and to increase equality of opportunity for all genders and for non-traditional families. It can be used alongside or instead of maternity or adoption leave.

The information linked to below is aimed not only at prospective parents but also at line managers of staff who may be considering shared parental leave, in order that they can advise and support them appropriately.
