The Scottish Learning Disabilities Observatory, based in the School of Health and Wellbeing, is a multi-disciplinary research centre dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The work of the Observatory includes research to better understand the determinants of health and health inequalities experienced by people with learning disabilities, along with research to understand the effectiveness of interventions including clinical trials, seeking to identify solutions to the health challenges that people with learning disabilities have identified. Since 2023, the Observatory offers a post-graduate training programme which integrates research and best practice to provide students with the skills to be leading practitioners supporting people with learning disabilities, particularly those with complex needs.

As part of the Byres Community Hub exhibition, we are highlighting the following projects:

Our Human Condition - as part of the SLDO disabilities week SLDO is delighted to feature Our Human Condition. Six images from the Our Human Condition project will be exhibited in the Byres Community Hub from 6th-10th May as part Scottish Learning Disability Week, alongside displays of three recent projects led by the Scottish Learning Disabilities Observatory.

Drumming Up Change – a community based project which brings adults with learning disabilities and students from Drumchapel High School together through a programme of joint activities. The project aims to challenge stigma, promote positive relationships and strengthen a sense of community belonging.

This is Me: Valuing the lives of people with learning disabilities – a public engagement project where we worked with self-advocates with learning disabilities and family carers creating a series of short films to share their experiences of stigma and discrimination and the changes the would like to see to make Scotland a more inclusive place.

Research for Everyone –  a collaborative project where SLDO worked with 6 self-advocates with learning disabilities, colleagues from across the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences and animation company Media Co-Op to translate complex health research into outputs that are easier to understand for people with diverse communications needs. Check out the animations, infographics and podcast episodes created by the group.
