Biography

Colin is James Watt Chair, Professor of Engineering Science at the University of Glasgow where he holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies. His research interests include emerging space technologies, orbital dynamics, swarming systems, space resources and climate engineering. This work is delivered through his contributions to the Space and Exploration Technology Group and the Integrated Space and Exploration Technology Laboratory, part of the Space Glasgow Research Network. Colin is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and Royal Academy of Engineering and was made MBE in June 2014 for services to Space Research, Science and Technology.

He has been a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award holder (2015-2020), a member of the Scottish Science Advisory Council (2016-2020) and Chair of the UK Space Agency’s Space Technology Advisory Committee (2019-2021). His current research activities on Emerging Space Technologies are supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering (2018-2028) and the SOLSPACE Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (2020-2025). He is keenly interested in the long-term impacts of Engineering Science, discussed during his 2015 inaugural lecture on Reclaiming the Human Future: Energy, Engineering and Ideas of Progress.
