The University of Glasgow is proud to welcome  actor, filmmaker and medievalist Terry Jones who will give  a guest lecture after his award of his Honorary Degree on  Friday 21 June 2013.

Chaucer in the 21st Century.
Terry Jones will focus his discussion on the images of the Canterbury pilgrims that appear in the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales,  Focusing in particular on the images of the knight, the monk and the friar, he will propose that the images were censored and will speculate on some of the motives and consequences for such censorship.

Terry Jones: writer, film director and performer.

Terry Jones is best known for his television and film work with Monty Python’s Flying Circus. As a film director he co-directed (with Terry Gilliam) Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and directed himself co-wrote and starred in The Life of Brian, The Meaning of Life, Erik the Viking, The Wind in the Willows. He directed Personal Services. He also wrote the screenplay for Jim Henson’s Labyrinth.

Television credits include: Crusades, Gladiators the Brutal Truth, Ancient Inventions, Hidden Histories, Medieval Lives, The Story of One (2005), Barbarians , The Great Map Mystery (BBC 2007),

Author of Fairy Tales, Fantastic Stories, The Saga of Erik the Viking, Nicobobinus, The Curse of the Vampire’s Socks, The Knight and the Squire, The Lady and the Squire, The Tyrant & The Squire. Academic works: Chaucer’s Knight (1980), Who Murdered Chaucer?(2003). The Image of Chaucer’s Knight in Speaking Images: Essays in Honor of V.A.Kolve (Pegasus Press, Asheville, North Carolina, (2001), Was Richard II A Tyrant? in Fourteenth Century England V, ed. Nigel Saul (Boydell Press, 2008).

Terry lectures in universities in the UK and the US. He has received honourary doctorates from several universities.

With Anna Soderstrom, Terry wrote the libretto for an ‘opera’ Evil Machines which he directed for the Teatro Sao Luiz, Lisbon (2008).

He wrote the libretto for and directed a short opera for the Royal Opera House, The Doctor’s Tale. Anne Dudly wrote the music. He has had three books published in 2011: Animal Tales, Trouble of the Heath, and Evil Machines. And has written and article for Toshiyuki Takamiya’s festschrift: “Did John Gower Re-dedicate His Confessio amantis Before Henry IV’s Usurpation?”

He is currently working on a new film, a documentary about the Economy and (with Jim Steinman) a musical version of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite for a New York Theatre.
