Webinar on Vertical Farming and Food Security

Date & Time: 16th April 2024, 7pm

Join us to hear Prof Derek Stewart (Director of the Advanced Plant Growth Centre at the James Hutton Institute) and Prof Nicola Holden (Lead of the Food Security Challenge Centre at the SRUC) speak about vertical farming and food security.

The impact of climate change and the associated extremes events, such as ever-increasing peak summer temperatures with droughts and floods, make the production of primary produce increasingly difficult. Allied to these the spiralling input costs are further impact food production and total cost of our food basket.

Solutions to these issues are being sought and vertical farming, growing in three dimensions, is one of a portfolio of approaches to ensure year-round availability for some food stuffs. Here we will show how vertical farming works, how quality and nutritional value can be enhanced and what the challenges are.

SCAF Webinar Series

We host a series of online webinars every 6 weeks to showcase the depth and breadth of work relevant to the alliance. Webinars are held either during the working day at 1pm, or in the evening, at 7pm. Each webinar will feature two speakers presenting for ~20 minutes, followed by a discussion and Q&A.

We are looking for speakers! Whilst we aim for a research and innovation focus, we would like to feature the work across sectors and disciplines within the broader topic of food. Early career members are particularly encouraged to come forward.
