Careers Masterclasses
Delivered during term time, these sesssions, currently offered either in-person or online and lasting 60 minutes, can help you get started with career planning and applications.
- You will only be allowed to enter the session in the first 10 minutes
- Online masterclasses are not recorded. Presentations will be shared with attendees during the live session, for both online and in-person masterclasses
- You will join online masterclasses from the event page on Glasgow Careers, the join link will only become live at the event start time, so please don't try to join before then
- Some masterclasses are delivered in-person and some online. Please ensure you check the event location when booking and in your booking confirmation email

Application forms
Application forms are mainly used by employers in the first stage of a selection process and are designed to collect specific information on candidates. Attend this Masterclass to improve your applications and increase your chances of being shortlisted.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Understand the structure and key components of employer application forms.
- Learn how recruiters shortlist candidates for a role.
- Apply techniques to write effective application form answers, including the STAR approach to competency questions.
Assessment Centres
Assessment centres are commonly used across graduate recruitment. This session will explain what to expect and give you the opportunity to take part in a mock assessment centre activity. Although you will not be assessed by staff or your peers, you will have the opportunity to reflect on your own experience.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Understand what an assessment centre is and its purpose in the recruitment process.
- Know and experience the most common activities of an assessment centre.
- Reflect on your performance and create an action plan for further development.
- Know where to access further resources and support.
Building your employability whilst at university
There are many ways that you can add to your CV and become more employable whilst at University, beyond getting a part-time job or an internship. Whether you’re a first year or a finalist, attend this masterclass to find out how to make the most of your time at UofG.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Know the variety of opportunities available to UofG students.
- Identify tools and resources to help you reflect on your experiences with employability in mind.
- Create a personal action plan for the year ahead.
Considering Postgraduate Study
Thinking about applying for postgraduate study? Reflect on what attracts you to further study, learn about the types of available course options and know how to begin the application process.
By the end of this session, you will;
- Identify why you are considering postgraduate study
- Consider the pros and cons of postgraduate study in terms of your career management
- Understand what postgraduate study options exist
- Learn about how to research the postgraduate study application process and potential funding options
Cover letters & supporting statements
Many job vacancies will require you to either a cover letter or a supporting statement alongside your CV or application form. Attend this session to understand how to write a cover letter or supporting statement that will get you noticed.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Be aware of the key differences between a cover letter and a supporting statement.
- Understand the structure and key components of a cover letter and a supporting statement.
- Know how to effectively tailor these documents to individual opportunities.
- Know about further sources of support in writing applications.
CVs
Your CV is often the first, and most competitive, stage of a selection process. Attend this session to learn how to create a compelling CV for graduate jobs and internships.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Understand the key components of an effective CV for graduate jobs and internships.
- Learn how recruiters shortlist candidates.
- Be able to identify different formats of CV.
- Know how to customise your CV for different roles.
Exploring entrepreneurship
Do you have an idea or skill to start your own business venture? Do you know what is meant by an entrepreneurial mindset and why this is valued by employers? Attend this masterclass delivered with the Student Enterprise team to understand the enterprise support available to you at the University of Glasgow to help you get started with your business venture, or ways to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Understand the concept of developing and displaying an entrepreneurial mindset.
- Have an increased understanding of the start-up landscape, including freelancing and how to pursue ideas.
- Know the support available from Student Enterprise at University of Glasgow to help you with your venture.
- Be aware of other organisations and sources of support accessible to those pursuing self-employment opportunities.
Finding internships & work experience
Internships and work experience are great ways for you to develop professionally and test out career ideas. Employers increasingly value internships or additional experiences when recruiting. Attend this session to learn about your options and how to find opportunities.

- Understand, and appreciate the value of, the different types of experience opportunities
- Know of a range of ways to find opportunities in your sector/s of interest
Finding part-time work
Many students choose to take up part-time work alongside their studies as it is a great way to earn money, gain transferable skills or gain confidence in the workplace.
This masterclass will focus on the practical steps you can take to increase the number of part-time jobs you can find and will share top tips on how you can be successful.

- Be aware of the typical part-time jobs that are available in Glasgow
- Know where to look to find part-time jobs so you can earn while you learn
- Understand what steps you are likely to face in the recruitment process
Getting started with your career thinking

Identifying your strengths & skills
Understanding your skills and strengths and being able to sell these to employers will help you find opportunities which are a good fit for you. Attend this session to understand how improved self-awareness can help you find and secure relevant opportunities.
By the end of this session, you will:
- Understand the skills you have to offer.
- Start to build a personal profile of your skills and strengths.
- Know how to showcase your skills and strengths throughout the application process, for example on a CV.
- Understand resources you can utilise to further identify and evidence your skills and strengths.
I'm a postgraduate student, what comes next?
Completing a postgraduate degree equips you with subject knowledge and skills, alongside a variety of other transferable skills. Attend this session to reflect on your postgraduate experience and how this can help you move forward in your career.

You’ve impressed an employer with your application, and they now want to meet you. Attend this Masterclass to learn about different types of interviews, how to answer common interview question types and how to do your best.

Mastering LinkedIn

Selection tests (also called online tests or psychometric tests) are used by many employers. They are particularly common in student and graduate scheme recruitment processes. Gain an insight into how, why and when employers use selection tests in the recruitment process.
