Students at The Hunterian

Students at the University of Glasgow can apply to join our team of volunteer tour guides through The Hunterian's Museum Student Educators (MuSE) programme. It's open to students of all disciplines and at all levels of study.

MuSE tours can take place in the Hunterian Museum, the Hunterian Art Gallery, or both. MuSE guides are expected to offer one tour a week over six months during the academic year.

Recruitment to the programme is by application and interview every September and April. Sign up to our student newsletter for updates.

Supporting University Teaching

The Hunterian supports University teaching colleagues in holding classes within our public venues. There are also opportunities for University of Glasgow students to undertake work placements and dissertation projects that engage with our collections.

If you would like to discuss bringing a class to our venues, or your students are interested in engaging with us on a placement or project, please contact hunterian-learning@glasgow.ac.uk.

Our staff also support the University's Short Courses programme available to the wider public.

Access Our Collections

We offer in-person research and teaching visits in The Hunterian Collections Study Centre at Kelvin Hall, a purpose-designed facility with a central collections store, object study rooms, teaching labs, conservation and digitisation studios and a conference suite.

These facilities provide an accessible location for researchers, students and the public.

We also offer remote viewings via visualiser and video conferencing facilities.

  • Please note that access to The Hunterian collections at Kelvin Hall is by appointment only.
  • All enquiries should be sent by email at least 20 working days in advance with details of what you require and for what purpose.
  • There is a limit to the number of objects/specimens available to researchers on each visit.
  • All researchers will be supervised at all times.

To book a research visit please email hunterian-collections@glasgow.ac.uk.

You can also explore our collections online.

Schools

The Hunterian welcomes school parties to the museum and art gallery for self-led visits. The collections and displays, covering many curricular areas, are suitable for a wide range of ages.

Bring your class to see our collections - or bring our collections to your classroom online!

However you plan to do it, we have a variety of resources to help enhance learning:
