Back to the Wharf

Mon 1 Mar - Thu 4 Mar 2021

China | 2020 | Mandarin with English Subtitles | 118 min

The extraordinary events of one day reverberate down the years in Li Xiaofeng’s haunting noir-tinged drama. Song Hao is a star pupil with a bright future until his university place is given to another boy. Events spiral from heartbreak to a murder that forces him to flee, returning home 15 years later for his mother’s funeral.

Understanding what happened that day becomes his only hope of a brighter future in a lushly beautiful, compelling tale that reveals something rotten at the heart of modern China. Zhang Yu from An Elephant Sitting Still is excellent as the hapless hero.

Yang Lina’s award-winning Spring Tide charts the experiences of three generations of Chinese women living under the same roof. Guo Jianbo (Lei Hao) has a successful career as a crusading investigative journalist. She shares a cramped flat with her domineering mother Ji (Elaine Jin), a woman who takes every opportunity to find fault.

Jianbo’s young daughter Wantig (Junxi Qu) is forced into the role of peacekeeper but old resentments run deep. In an explosive atmosphere of conflicting memories and competing values what will it take for one of them to declare a truce?
