Short Description

This course provides a detailed introduction to the digestive system, the digestive processes and metabolic pathways involved in digestion and energy production and discussed the endocrine control of digestion and metabolism in domestic animals.

Course Aims

The aim of the course is to:

■ Provide an overview of the underlying science of gastrointestinal physiology and metabolism in animals

covering important metabolic pathways, digestive physiology and endocrine control of anabolism and catabolism.

■ To provide an understanding of the nervous and endocrine systems with particular emphasis on the autonomic nervous system and its pharmacology with relevance to the control of the digestive tract.

■ To provide an understanding of the underlying science of gastrointestinal physiology and metabolism in animals, covering important metabolic pathways and their biochemical basis, digestive physiology and endocrine control of anabolism and catabolism.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Explain how mammalian cells generate and utilise energy from a variety of substrates and metabolites

2. Describe the digestive systems and processes present in common domestic and companion animal and how they function to provide the necessary substrates for cell metabolism.

3. Describe how digestion, energy partitioning and metabolism are integrated between tissues: liver, muscle, brain, adipose tissue

4. Describe how GI function, digestion, energy partitioning and metabolism are regulated by endocrine factors and neural systems

5. Interpret tabular and graphical data given in data interpretation question format

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course summative assessment.
