Short Description

The intention of the Directed Study Option element is to provide a robust but flexible structure capable of accommodating the varying interests, competences and requirements of PG students in TRS. The programme will involve a great proportion of directed independent study and/or will focus more intensively on the development of area-specific research skills and knowledge.

Timetable

10 x 1.5 hour tutorials arranged in consultation with the student.

5 x 1 hour seminars involving all those undertaking directed study

Requirements of Entry

Standard entry to Masters at College level.

Assessment

1 x 3-4,000 word essay (weighted at 70%)

1 x 2,000 word specialised essay or book review (weighted at 30%)

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Provide a customised programme of directed study pertinent to the student's academic interests within the subject area of TRS

■ Encourage the development of independent learning and self-directed research skills appropriate to a master's level

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Show detailed knowledge and critical understanding within a chosen area of specialist focus in TRS

■ Identify and apply appropriate research methodology

■ Formulate and resolve problems arising in the course of their research.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
