Short Description

Media, Culture & Society MSc degrees are designed to culminate in a thesis of 12000-15000 words as an alternative to the Group Project. Students will be assigned a Dissertation supervisor in Semester 2.

Timetable

June-September is the focused writing period, but with research and planning taking place across the full academic year.

Requirements of Entry

None for the course specifically, but entry to the MSc programme requires a good first degree in a relevant discipline.

Assessment

Dissertation research proposal (3000 words) (20%)

This will allow students to develop and focus their topic through independent interdisciplinary exploration of key literatures and other resources in the field.

 

Dissertation (9-12,000 words) (80%)

Course Aims

The MSc dissertation option offers students the opportunity to identify an original research proposal and to conduct independent research on their chosen topic. This allows students to conduct research on a topic under the guidance of a supervisor and will acquaint them with a wide variety of research methods and encourage the use of these various research methods.

 

The aim is to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate that they can integrate the taught and research elements of the course and in the process to develop the skills needed to pursue postgraduate research.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of specialised theories, concepts and principles in the field of media, culture and society.

■ Apply knowledge, skills and understanding in planning and executing a significant piece of research and writing.

■ Identify, conceptualise and define new and abstract problems and issues.

■ Work independently using their own initiative to produce work containing a substantial element of originality.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
