Short Description

Nankai and Glasgow Joint Graduate School Summer School is a three week non-credit bearing Course which brings students from the Nankai and Glasgow Joint Graduate School and the Nankai Graduate School to The University of Glasgow. The course combines classes in study skills, seminar participation, presentation skills, Library skills and essay and dissertation writing with subject specific lectures and field trips in Environmental Science, International Relations, Translation Studies and Urban Planning. It is designed to give Nankai students a taste of life at Glasgow University and provide them with the opportunity to enhance their study skills before continuing their postgraduate education.

Timetable

The course is intended to develop the student's skills in a U.K. University environment. The first week of the course will draw on the expertise of the English for Academic Study staff at Glasgow. They will provide a series of sessions on study skills, seminar participation, presentation skills, Library skills and essay and dissertation writing. In the second week the class will split into separate Theme groups based on the subject being studied in the JGS. The week will involve subject based seminars, lectures and field trips delivered by a Theme Lead from each programme and Glasgow staff in the appropriate field. In the final week the students will work on a group projects drawn from the material covered in Week 2. Final assessment will be by group presentation.

Assessment

Assessment will be by participation in a group project presentation which will take place on Thursday 2nd August. The topic of the project will be selected by each group in consultation with the Theme Leads. The group presentations will each last for 20 minutes and will be followed by questions from staff and students present. The Course is non-credit bearing but the presentations will be assessed by academic staff drawn from the teaching team who will offer feedback on content and delivery.

The assessment procedures will be explained and discussed during the time set aside for Project preparation and the students will be encouraged to seek advice and feedback on presentation skills.

Students who are unable to participate in the group presentation will be offered the option of submitting a replacement essay (up to 1000 words) on a topic drawn from the Course and agreed with the Theme Lead.
