Short Description

The aim of this course is to introduce learners to academic approaches to Scottish Heritage (principally Scottish History and Scottish Literature) relevant to business development. The course also teaches sustainable practical skills involved in the research, authentication, and exploitation of cultural resources in a commercial context. Learners on this course will be able to apply the insights of current research in the areas of Scottish History and Scottish Literature in ways which will stimulate imaginative approaches to new markets for Scottish goods, attractions and services.

Timetable

This course will be conducted online over ten weeks. Weekly online lessons will be completed in the learner's own time and there will be five 1-hour online seminars over ten weeks.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ introduce learners to academic approaches to Scottish Heritage relevant to business development through the lens of Scottish History, Literature and Culture

■ encourage awareness of how Scottish culture offers opportunities to diversify income streams and services, thus building resilience

■ enhance learners' appreciation of how cultural capital and place are important features of economic development, wellbeing, and sustainability

■ help learners contribute to heritage initiatives relating to business development, social capital, and entrepreneurship

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ locate and use relevant cultural sources and resources

■ authenticate cultural claims and discriminate between reliable and unreliable sources

■ explore, examine and model the historic and cultural resonances of their business/service and local area/region in relation to Scotland's position in the world

■ identify ways to grow the cultural component of commercial operations

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
