Short Description

Introduces students to the broad range of current research on autism spectrum disorders (ASDs).

Timetable

2 hours of lectures for 5 weeks

Requirements of Entry

At least 2:1 honours degree in a science subject.

Assessment

The summative assessment will be a 20-minute electronic presentation in the form of a podcast + supporting visual material. This could be submitted as an mp3 file with supporting powerpoint or as a Camtasia presentation. An additional component will be a forum associated with the presentation on the course Virtual Learning Environment to allow other students on the course to ask questions. 

Course Aims

To introduce students to the broad range of current research on autism spectrum disorders (ASDs).

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this programme students will be able to:

■ identify the advantages and disadvantages of current definitions of ASD and diagnostic techniques.

■ critically assess current psychological/cognitive theories of ASD.

■ critically assess current neural theories of ASD.

■ describe the potential causes of ASD

■ explain with detailed knowledge the social and scientific importance of ASD.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
