Short Description

This course provides an opportunity to learn the advanced skills and knowledge required to manage patients with complex lymphoedema. The course will equip students with the necessary theory underpinning these skills and explore the evidence base and facilitate development of decision-making skills at an advanced level. Learning of theory is consolidated with workplace and on-line learning to do develop the skills of an advancing practitioner in this field.

Requirements of Entry

Applicants will normally hold a professional qualification of either Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional, hold a first degree and have a minimum clinical experience of equivalent of 2 years full time employment since qualifying; currently be working with or have pre-arranged access to patients with chronic oedema/lymphoedema; have confirmed support of management and have completed the two courses 'Lymphoedema Core Skills' and 'Lymphoedema Application of Core Skills' or equivalent.

Assessment

A 1000 word critical analysis of a practice issue at advanced practitioner level (ILO2; weighting 25%);

A 1500 word critical appraisal of the evidence supporting clinical decisions based on a patient assessment and treatment plan for a complex lymphoedema patient on standard documentation (ILOs 1-3,5; weighting 25%);

A 2500 word case study which includes adaptations to practice based on review and critical evaluation of practice and decision-making in the context of advanced practice (ILOs 1,2,4-6; 50% weighting).

Course Aims

This course will provide the health care professional with the opportunity to develop the theory and practice of more advanced skills in the management of complex lymphoedema including the Casley-Smith technique of Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. demonstrate appropriate and effective application of specialist knowledge and skills in Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy and discussing the rationale for each aspect of treatment in relation to altered patho-physiology;

2. critically analyse clinical practice problems relating to patients with complicated oedema, showing the ability to synthesise information to make appropriate judgements in determining the diagnosis and developing and leading individualised treatment plans;

3. critically appraise and synthesise the evidence base for Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy;

4. critically evaluate their own practice and decision-making in relation to advanced practice in the management of people with complicated oedema;

5. exercise substantial autonomy and initiative within the context of rehabilitation and a holistic approach to care but make appropriate referrals.

6. demonstrate effective and sensitive communication and provision of patient information, based on individual needs and critical awareness of factors that may influence concordance with treatment and promotion of self-management.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must achieve of grade D3 or above in each of the written assignments, which involve submission of three pieces of course work and a pass in the assessment of clinical skills and competencies to be awarded credit.
