Short Description

This course will explore the effect of global environment changes on public health and will examine the principles of sustainable clinical practice.

Requirements of Entry

To enter Year 4 of the BN (Hons) programme, students must normally have attained a grade C or better at first attempt in Developing Knowledge for Nursing and Health 2 and Advancing Knowledge for Contemporary Nursing Practice 3, and a grade D or better in all other components of summative assessment in Years 2 and 3 including practice learning placements.

Component 1 - 100% weighting, portfolio of evidence (ILO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6).

Course Aims

The course aims to:

Explore the impact of the global environment and climate change on public health. 

Examine the impact of healthcare as a contributor to the ecosystem crisis.

Enable students to evaluate the principles of sustainable clinical practice.

Promote healthcare knowledge and understanding of the importance of planetary health values

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Examine the social determinants of health that influence global health outcomes.

2. Explore the connection between the impact of climate change and global health trends and healthcare activities.

3. Explore the role that health systems have in shaping sustainability and impacting climate change.

4. Evaluate sustainable healthcare initiatives to address the impact of climate change and human disruption on ecosystems.

5. Discuss the environmental impact that policies have on health and health services and the complexity of global health governance.

6. Identify opportunities for leadership and advocacy skills to promote social, policy and structural change.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

A minimum of a Grade D in all components of summative assessment.

For all components of assessments, 100% submission of assessments is normally required.
