Short Description

This course will explore professional nursing practice to prepare students to lead professionally, make evidence-base decisions, promote a learning culture, and understand strategic planning in healthcare.

Requirements of Entry

To enter Year 4 of the BN (Hons) programme, students must normally have attained a grade C or better at first attempt in Developing Knowledge for Nursing and Health 2 and Advancing Knowledge for Contemporary Nursing Practice 3, and a grade D or better in all other components of summative assessment in Years 2 and 3 including practice learning placements.

Assessment

Component 1 - 20% weighting, practical in teaching, learning and assessment and written report (ILOs 4 & 6).

Component 2 - 80% weighting, written assignment (2500 words +/-10%) on professionalism in nursing practice (ILOs 1, 2, 3, & 5)

Course Aims

The course aims to provide students with an opportunity to:

Explore the concepts of professionalism in nursing. 

Evaluate leadership and management theories that apply to professional nursing practice.

Examine the importance of being a role model in nursing.

Participate in the sharing and dissemination of evidence-informed nursing practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Apply knowledge and understanding of leadership and management theories in nursing.

2. Discuss the importance of professional identity in nursing and healthcare.

3. Appraise theories of change, negotiation, and decision-making to nursing practice.

4. Demonstrate how reflection can enhance learning and professional development.

5. Critically discuss professional qualities necessary to support person-centred practice.

6. Develop and implement evidence-based strategies to support learning, supervision, and assessment in nursing.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

A minimum of a Grade D in all components of summative assessment.

For all components of assessments, 100% submission of assessments is normally required.
