Short Description

This course will provide students with a critical understanding of leadership, management and team working within health care, utilising knowledge of leadership and management theories and to apply such knowledge to clinical practice.

Requirements of Entry

Mandatory Entry Requirements

Students must have attained a grade C or better in Nursing and Health Studies (Year 2) and Nursing (Year 3) and grade D or better in all other assessments in Years 2 & 3, at the first attempt.

Co-requisites

All Year 4 courses of the Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) Degree must be taken, unless previously achieved.

Assessment

■ 500 word bulletin on a contemporary topic will contribute 20% towards the overall grade.

■ 2,500 word essay will contribute 80% towards the overall grade.

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. Failure to attain a D3 or higher in this course results in transfer to the Ordinary Degree programme.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

Enable students to critically analyse leadership and management styles and their impact on clinical care.

Provide students with the ability to effectively appraise teams and team working within health care

Understand the principles of change management within healthcare settings.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

 

Knowledge and Understanding

1. Critically discuss the influence of strategic planning on health care (Professional Values)

2. Apply knowledge and understanding of leadership and management to critically discuss how health care is delivered and managed (Professional Values).

3. Critically analyse the role of communications in team working (Communication and Interpersonal Skills).

4. Appraise theories of motivation, leadership, negotiation and decision making and their application to practice (Nursing Practice and Decision Making).

5. Critically appraise models of change management, tools and techniques for assessing the need for change and methods of evaluating the impact of change (Leadership, Management and Team Working).
