Short Description

This course provides an opportunity to advance nursing knowledge; enabling students to appraise, integrate and assimilate clinical information and respond with an appropriate plan of care for people with a range of healthcare needs. Students will use systematic assessment tools and theoretical frameworks to prioritise, plan and implement care that is safe, effective, and evidence-based for people with complex healthcare requirements. The Advancing Knowledge for Contemporary Nursing Practice (AKCNP) course adopts a person-centred approach, drawing on advancing knowledge of health, human disease, and long-term conditions for people across the lifespan living within different socio-political contexts. Students will be prepared for leading and managing care and supporting interdisciplinary working within contemporary healthcare settings.

Requirements of Entry

To enter Year 3 of the BN(Hons) programme, students must have achieved a minimum of Grade D for all components of summative assessment, including practice learning and achieved all the NMC platforms and proficiencies required for Year 2.

Component 1 - 30% weighting, Case Study - Structured Reflection Analysis of a Clinical Scenario (ILOs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)

Component 2 - 70% weighting, Written Examination (ILOs 1, 2, 3, and 4)

Course Aims

The aim of the Advancing Knowledge for Contemporary Nursing Practice (AKCNP) course is to prepare the student to integrate, develop and advance their knowledge of contemporary nursing theory and its clinical application to meet the person-centred needs of adults with health care problems. AKCNP advances professional, legal, and ethical knowledge to support the delivery of evidence informed healthcare.

AKCNP will enable students to progress towards fulfilment of the 'Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses' (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2018).

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Apply knowledge and understanding of nursing theory, the nursing process and evidence-based care to deliver integrated, and safe person-centred nursing care.

2. Discuss the role of healthcare policy in the delivery of safe, high quality and effective care across healthcare organisations.

3. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of leadership, management and interdisciplinary team working in the delivery of person-centred care across all care settings.

4. Relate professional, legal, and ethical values to the delivery of safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care.

5. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to support their continued personal, professional growth and development.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

A minimum of a Grade D in all components of summative assessment.

For all components of assessments and degree examinations, 100% submission of all assessments is normally required.
