Short Description

This foundation course introduces this exciting and challenging speciality and aims to increase participants' knowledge and understanding of patient care in relation to general aspects of burn injury and reconstructive plastic surgery. This will allow you to apply this knowledge and understanding to clinical practice in the acute and rehabilitation settings.

Requirements of Entry

Applicants must also have:

Professional qualification and current membership of a health care professional body e.g. General Medical Council, Health Professionals Council, Nursing & Midwifery Council.

Candidates must be currently involved in patient care and with the ability to gain experience in caring for patients with burns or requiring plastic surgery.

Applications are welcome from people with alternative qualifications than a degree. Each person's application will be considered on an individual basis and people may be asked to produce evidence of continued professional development.

Applicants will normally be interviewed as part of the selection process.

A 2,500 word essay based on a case study.

Course Aims

This course aims to increase students' knowledge and understanding of patient care in relation to burn injury and reconstructive plastic surgery.

This course aims to promote students' application of this knowledge and understanding to clinical practice in the acute setting and rehabilitation.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Apply the anatomy and physiology of the skin and underlying structures to burn injuries and all conditions requiring reconstructive plastic surgery.

2. Analyse knowledge of pain mechanisms and pain control in the care of adult and paediatric patients.

3. Discuss the psychosocial impact of burn injuries and plastic surgery on the care of these patient groups and critically appraise communication skills necessary.

4. Appraise the evidence in the wound healing process and its application to practice.

5. Analyse the different methods for infection control in a burns or plastic surgery unit.

6. Discuss the ethical and legal aspects of care for these patients.
