Short Description

This course further develops the student's knowledge and understanding of life sciences and pharmacology. The course assists students in making the link between health, ill health and disease processes.

Requirements of Entry

To enter Year 2 of the BN(Hons) programme, students must have achieved a minimum of Grade D for all components of summative assessment including practice learning and achieved all the NMC platforms and proficiencies required for Year 1.

Course Aims

This course will develop students' knowledge of integrated biomedical life sciences and the biological basis of disease. By engaging with this course, students will gain an understanding of the human body as a complex, integrated system; and be able to apply the core fundamental principles and concepts of human disease and pathology to nursing and health care.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Articulate extended knowledge and understanding of biomedical life sciences in maintaining homeostasis, health, and wellbeing.

2. Apply extended knowledge of integrated biomedical systems to recognise pathophysiological changes in people across the lifespan.

3. Articulate fundamental knowledge and understanding of the principles and concepts of human disease and pathology.

4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of pharmacological principles to common medicinal substances used to promote health, wellbeing and prevent illness.

5. Articulate knowledge and understanding of genetics as a biological basis of disease.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

A minimum of a Grade D in the summative assessment.
