Short Description

This foundational course introduces students to the standards that registered nurses must uphold, and which constitute the "The Code. Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates" (NMC, 2018). The knowledge, proficiencies and attributes for nursing and health which registered nurses need in order to meet these standards and care for persons of all ages and in all care settings are explored. Students are challenged to consider the professional and wider social context of nursing and health. Engaging in reflection and the use of active learning strategies in classroom and simulation settings will enable students to think critically about the values and evidence on which safe, effective and person-centred care is based.

Hepatitis B surface antigen negative, satisfactory health screening and PVG scheme membership.

Assessment

Component 1 - 20% weighting, group presentation on professional, ethical, and legal considerations in nursing and health (ILOs 1 and 3).

Component 2 - 80% weighting, written assignment (1500 words +/- 10%) on an aspect of nursing and health (ILOs 2, 4 and 5)

Course Aims

To get students to reflect on their own values and the values underpinning safe, compassionate, effective and person-centred care in line with legal, ethical and professional standards.

Through consideration of the factors which influence nursing and health, to encourage students to investigate the nature and origins of inequalities in health across the lifespan, and the principles of promoting health and preventing ill health.

To enable students to make evidence-informed decisions about nursing and health.

To practise a range of nursing procedures and communication and relationship management skills in a simulated health care setting (examples provided in the course handbook). 

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Reflect on the "The Code. Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates" (NMC, 2018) and related ethical and legal considerations.

2. Discuss health and health inequalities across the lifespan.

3. Make evidence-informed decisions in relation to nursing and health.

4. Apply a range of communication and relationship management skills to participation in care in a simulated health care setting.

5. Explain the principles underpinning a range of nursing procedures.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

A minimum of a Grade D in all components of summative assessment. For the purposes of all assessments and degree examinations, 100% submission of all assessments is normally required.
