Short Description

This course aims to introduce honours students to the interdisciplinary challenges raised by the study of gender as an integral component of the creative arts and to provide them the tools to negotiate these challenges critically through written scholarly argument and oral presentation.

Timetable

One two-hour session per week over 10 weeks; weekly one hour tutorial over 10 weeks as scheduled on MyCampus.

Requirements of Entry

Available to all students fulfilling requirements for Honours entry into Theatre Studies, and by arrangement to visiting students or students of other Honours programmes.

Assessment

Essay (3,000 words) - 50%

Seminar presentation of 10 minutes + 5 mins of questions - 40%  

annotated bibliography (1000 words) - 10%

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? Not applicable

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ develop students' awareness of gender as an aesthetic and culturally significant consideration within creative practice across a range of disciplines.

■ develop students' understanding of the implicit and explicit operation of gendered constructs or ideologies within cultural debates.

■ engage students in interdisciplinary dialogue concerning the role of gender in the history, theory and practice of the creative arts.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

■ Analyse key questions and debates concerning the role of gender in a range of cultural texts and creative practices.

■ Critically engage, through effectively argued academic prose, with an appropriate range of scholarly literature on gender in the creative arts.

■ Design and deliver a well-structured presentation, demonstrating historical perpective on creative negotations of genders.

■ Evaluate the role of gender in cultural debates across a range of creative discpilines.

■ Critically appraise a wide selection of relevant scholarly literature on Gender in the the Creative Arts.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
