Short Description

Contributing chiefly to the SMLC Translation Studies programme, this course offers training in advanced translation practice from English to Mandarin across a wide range of text types and genres, including technical (legal, medical, manuals), literary (prose and poetry) and marketing and media texts (news articles, press releases and advertising).

Requirements of Entry

Standard entry to Masters at College level.

 

Candidates for the course should have native or near native competence in Mandarin, a good Honours degree (2.1 or better) and be able to demonstrate competence in English equivalent to European Common Framework C1.

Assessment

Time-limited translation exercise of 600 words to be completed over an 8-hour period (50%)

Portfolio of work comprised as follows:

■ 2 translations of 500-700 words each, chosen from 7 submitted throughout the semester (all unrevised following class discussions). (10% each)

■ Revised translation of 500-700 words (also chosen from the 7). (10%)

■ 1,500-word translation commentary to accompany the revised piece (20%)

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ provide students with a solid grounding and training in translating independently from English into Mandarin

■ examine and situate a range of registers and varieties of English expanding on the range covered in ATLS 1

■ consider the application of translation methodologies

■ explore and illustrate the use of language-area specific reference and support materials

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ analyse a range of registers, sociolects, specialist discourses and other varieties of English relative to material covered in ATLS 1

■ render these appropriately in Mandarin, considering the stylistic and linguistic differences between the languages

■ apply translation strategies and concepts in stylistics relevant to English and Mandarin, advancing skills developed in ATLS 1

■ explore and employ standard reference tools and other resources to build upon skills acquired in ATLS1

■ cultivate communication, presentational and IT skills appropriate to the course

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
