Short Description

This course, which enables students to reach the A1.3 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, is for students who have previously taken the 'Language Skills 1 - French' module at the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, Canada. It will build on the first course and introduce students to more complex grammar, extend their reading and writing knowledge of French, and develop their oral and listening comprehension skills. The course will also enhance the students' knowledge of French culture and enable them to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic faux pas when speaking French and/or when in France and in other French-speaking countries.

Requirements of Entry

Standard entry to Masters at College level.

Pass in 'Language Skills 1 - French' at the School of Business at UoV.

Students must be enrolled in the Master in Global Business programme, which is jointly taught by the Adam Smith Business School (University of Glasgow), the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business (University of Victoria - Canada) and the Chulalongkorn Business School (Chulalongkorn University, Thailand).

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Enable students to reach the A1.3 level in the CEFR in spoken and written French

■ Enhance all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) while developing the confidence to use the language accurately in a limited range of familiar situations

■ Develop transferable skills such as communication skills, confidence, initiative, socio-cultural sensitivity and time management

■ Deepen the students' knowledge and understanding of the customs, culture and society of the countries where the target language is spoken

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Understand and use key vocabulary and simple speech patterns in routine situations 

■ Communicate more effectively in oral and written French, in everyday situations such as describing one's routine, arranging appointments, making phone calls

■ Understand and use low intermediate grammar structures of the target language, including perfect indicative and simple future

■ Comprehend and verbally summarise the key information of audio and/or video material

■ Apply some intercultural competence to both daily life and business environments

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
