Short Description

This course will provide students with a critical understanding of ethics in research and clinical practice. It will also provide students with knowledge of good clinical and scientific practice, and ethical governance issues related to research and clinical practice.

Assessment

Written examination (75%) [ILOs 1 & 2]:

This test comprises scenario-based, constructed response type items that are suitable for assessing higher-level cognitive skills.

 

Course engagement (25%): [ILO 3]:

This comprises student oral contribution in class, completion of weekly set reading, participation in group discussions of assigned case scenarios, and chairing or co-chairing a group discussion.  The assessment is on evidence of reflection upon the course material, which entails the effort made to engage with it.

Course Aims

This course aims to provide students with a critical understanding ethics in research and clinical practice, good clinical and scientific practice, and ethical governance in research and clinical practice.

The course also aims to equip students for the ethical aspects of their own medical or scientific practices, to enable them to evaluate and to conduct a research project and to evaluate other research and practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Critically discuss the ethical issues relating to medical science, and its translation into clinical practice.

2. Critically discuss and apply good clinical/scientific practice, and understand ethical governance in research and clinical practice.

3. Reflect on and critically evaluate their current research and clinical practices, and how ethical issues may influence these.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.

Attendance at the five on-campus sessions is mandatory, however justifiable absences will be considered (e.g. through disability, illness, or other substantive personal circumstances) and students will be provided with opportunity to fulfil the assessment requirement at a later date.
