MBChB 1st Year MED1003

  • Academic Session: 2024-25
  • School: School of Medicine Dentistry and Nursing
  • Credits: 120
  • Level: Level 1 (SCQF level 7)
  • Typically Offered: Runs Throughout Semesters 1 and 2
  • Available to Visiting Students: No
  • Collaborative Online International Learning: No

Short Description

The course comprises the first year of the MBChB programme (A100-2100). In a predominantly systems-based approach, students learn about basic biomedical sciences; vocational studies related to their future role as a practitioner; and basic clinical skills.

Timetable

Various times throughout year. The class is timetabled as three separate cohorts for small group teaching, labs and clinical skills, but the entire year group comes together for lectures. In a typical week, students will have 2 x 1-hour PBL sessions; 1 x 3-hour lab/seminar, 1 x 3-hour vocational study (small group) sessions, and 3-5 x 1-hour lectures (= 13 hours direct contact/week). There are occasional clinical skills sessions (variable duration, 1 to 1.5hr).

Note that: 'lectures' applies to didactic teaching, administrative sessions and interactive feedback sessions using the EVS; some Vocational Studies sessions are off-campus (at GP practice, hospital or hospice): there is some E-learning in the form of clinical skills podcasts and online MCQ quizzes/Peerwise.

MED 1005 MBChB 1 Written Examination

MED 1006 Medical Independent Learning Exercise (MILE)

Note that students must obtain grade D3 or better in each component of the assessment (i.e. in each of MED 1004, MED 1005 and MED 1006); no compensation is permitted between components.

Main Assessment In: April/May

Course Aims

The first year of the programme aims:

■ To help students acquire and apply knowledge in biomedical sciences that underpins clinical medicine; to encourage acquisition of skills and competences that underpin clinical practice, and the values, attitudes and behaviours of medical practitioners.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Apply their knowledge of biomedical sciences in the context of the body systems in both health and disease [assessed via MED 1005, see Section 29]

■ Apply their understanding of the biopsychosocial aspects of health to individuals and communities [assessed in MED 1004 including the Life History and Community Diagnosis Projects, see Section 29]

■ Integrate clinical and communication skills (assessed in Year 2 of programme on advice of external examiners)

■ Recognise the professional values, attitudes and behaviours they will be required to demonstrate as practitioners (formatively assessed in personal and professional development domain of Vocational Studies)

■ Integrate knowledge from a variety of sources (library, virtual media, lectures, laboratories and PBL sessions) into a coherent understanding of a topic [assessed via MED 1004, 1006, see Section 29]

■ Work in small groups and communicate with peers [assessed via element of MED 1004, see Section 29]

■ Recognise effective study skills and take responsibility for their own learning [assessed indirectly via MED 1005, see Section 29]

Note that these global Year 1 ILOs are underpinned by ILOs for each lecture, PBL scenario, or other teaching session (~300 in total). Session-level ILOs are released to students in advance, or at the beginning of teaching sessions, as appropriate; the exception is that ILOs for PBL sessions are released retrospectively, since the emphasis in the PBL component of the course is for students to generate their own learning objectives (as per global ILO 2), and the retrospective ILOs are intended to provide students with reassurance.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must complete all components of the course and attendance is compulsory in accordance with the MBChB Attendance Procedures.
