Short Description

In this course students will develop the skills needed for project work in the context of studying various short mathematical topics. It is examined by means of two projects and a presentation.

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. For non Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

Course Aims

In this course students develop the skills needed for writing and presenting mathematical material. This is done through project work related to a variety of topics in Pure and Applied Mathematics and by presenting results both on paper and orally. Assessment is by means of two short projects. Use of the software needed to undertake these projects is taught at the beginning of the course.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ use the software LaTeX to prepare and orally present documents with a significant amount of mathematical content;

■ express themselves fluently when writing and presenting mathematical material;

■ use the software packages Mathematica to facilitate the solving of a number of mathematical problems, appropriate to the other courses in their degree programme;

■ demonstrate a better understanding of how use of mathematical software can both give extra insight into mathematical problems and help in solving them.
