Course Aims

to provide experience of independent working in an area of application or theory and an introduction to research in the disciplines of mathematics and computing science
to develop written and verbal presentation and communication skills

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

Students should work to attain the following competencies:

to integrate knowledge gained from the lecture courses and skills gained from the lecture programmes in Levels 4 & 5 in order to carry out a piece of research;

to demonstrate a sound understanding of the major issues in the area in which the project is posed;

to demonstrate the ability to plan a piece of research and to carry it out;

to demonstrate a critical appreciation of the issues involved in addressing the research questions;

to present and interpret the results, including critical review and discussion thereof in a well-structured thesis;

to present the results of the investigation orally to an audience.
