Short Description

This course provides the opportunity to undertake a course in Latin language or literature, or in Roman history, tailored to their own research interests, subject to the availability of a relevant member of staff.

Timetable

This is a PG (T) course, taught over one semester. Teaching will be by weekly seminar if enrolment is five or more, or by weekly supervision and guided reading if enrolment is fewer than five

Requirements of Entry

Available to students who have Latin to Honours level or equivalent, or at the discretion of the MLitt (T) convener

Assessment

One 3000 word essay (50%) and one 1.5 hour examination (50%)

Course Aims

To allow students to pursue advanced study of topics in Latin literature and/or Roman culture and history via texts in the original Latin

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course students should be able to:
* discuss in class the literary, cultural, or historical significance of the set texts
* write well-researched, well-argued, and relevant critical essays on the set texts
* demonstrate a detailed understanding of the most significant contemporary interpretations of the set texts
* comment in an informed and detailed manner on passages from the set texts in terms of their literary, cultural, or historical significance
* translate passages from the set texts into English that is accurate, idiomatic, and clear
