Short Description

This course is an introduction to key themes in Global History, giving students a solid grounding in the historiography of a growing discipline. In a series of weekly seminars, students will discuss critical pieces of scholarship, which have defined the study of Global History in the twenty-first century, paying special attention to the themes of global inequalities, empires, migration, slavery, and the environment.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

■ Explore debates on the theoretical and methodological approaches underpinning the field of Global History.

■ Engage with critical works of scholarship, which have developed and defined the discipline of Global History in the 21st Century.

■ Investigate themes of global inequalities, empires, migration, slavery, and the environment.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Appraise current trends in Global History and explain their relationships to each other;

■ Apply rigorous critical analysis to scholarship in the field of Global History;

■ Engage with peers in a critical, open-minded and respectful discussion of recent work in Global History

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
