2) 25% Course work on a conceptual design of a heat pump system to heat a building at the University campus.

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to give the students an understanding of the fundamental thermodynamics of modern energy systems including internal combustion engines, refrigerators, air conditioners, and heat pumps.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ perform analysis of thermodynamic cycles of internal combustion engines;

■ determine, theoretically as well as experimentally, basic engine performance parameters;

■ perform analysis of vapour compression cycle refrigeration, heat pump, and air conditioner systems;

■ conduct conceptual design of vapour compression cycle refrigeration, heat pump, and air conditioner systems, as well as internal combustion engines. 

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must attend the degree examination.
