Short Description

This course provides students with a fundamental level of research literacy and a context within which to carry out a practice based research project within which they will collect, analyse and discuss different forms of data in order to explore a relevant social issue

Timetable

10 sessions exploring research theory and practice are run over both semesters

Individual supervision sessions will be held over both semesters.

12,000 - 15,000-word dissertation

Course Aims

Introduce students to the philosophy, theory and practice of social research

Provide students with experience in reading and critically reviewing research

Prepare students to plan and implement research project of appropriate scope

Prepare students to develop and deploy appropriate research strategies to explore their research question

Enable students to collect, analyse and discus different forms of data

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

Identify their own research paradigm and articulate their ontological and epistemological position

Explore a range of research methodologies and select an appropriate approach for their research project

Make informed and considered judgements about the nature and process of their research project

Critique and evaluate research in the professional field of adult education, community development and youth work in order to inform their research project

Construct and conduct a substantial piece of applied research pertaining to adult education, community development or youth work.
Demonstrate their applied research skills, particularly analysis and application within a specific context

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
