Short Description

The purpose of the dissertation is to provide students with an opportunity to undertake a supervised research exercise, involving the collection and analysis of data about a subject relevant to the study of Adult Education, Community Development or Youth Studies or a combination of two or more of these fields.

Assessment

A dissertation between 12,000-15,000 words that will provide students with an opportunity to undertake a supervised research exercise. Within the context of an agreed subject relevant to the study of Adult Education, Community Development or Youth Studies or a combination of two or more of these fields.

A great variety of enterprises can be accepted as a legitimate research exercise for the MSc - review of policy; a professional experience; a participant observation report; a philosophical enquiry; a case study; a critical account of the progressive building up of a curriculum or institution; a macro-study of official statistics; any of these could make a satisfactory research exercise.

Course Aims

To provide students with an opportunity to undertake a supervised research exercise involving the collection and analysis of data within the context of an agreed subject relevant to the study of Adult Education, Community Development or Youth Studies or a combination of two or more of these fields.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

Produce a research proposal for undertaking a clearly defined research project

Critically review the significance of wider knowledge in the field, present in the secondary literature that is relevant to your chosen topic

Implement a coherent methodology of data collection or conceptual argument demonstrating an awareness of alternative research strategies and theoretical approaches and using techniques appropriate to your subject of investigation

Present your research data and conceptual argument, as appropriate, in a clear and concise manner.

Critically analyse and evaluate the significance of original research data and other conceptual work in the field, as appropriate in the context of other relevant research in your field of study

Employ standard conventions for referencing and bibliography consistently whilst avoiding plagiarism

Apply ethical procedures for collecting data.
