Short Description

The course aims to develop students' capacity to critically engage with theoretical and empirical literature in museum and heritage education literature in order to obtain an overview of current thinking and recent developments.There will be a particular emphasis on appropriate research methodologies and how these are employed in museum education contexts.

Assessment

1. 3000 word critical essay on chosen topic comprised of a literature review and proposed methodology for an identified area of interest from museum and heritage education. (75%)

2. Students prepare an individual presentation of specialism area and provides justification for research. (25%)

Course Aims

This course will provide students with opportunities to:

 

■ Examine in depth specialist areas in museum and heritage education including accessibility, digitisation, curation and entrepreneurship.

 

■ Complete an extended review of the literature in a specialist area.

 

■ Develop the capacity to critically engage with and use theoretical and empirical data in order to obtain an overview of a specialist area.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

LO1 Apply specialist knowledge to analyse the specific areas of specialization and identify and justify issues for further investigation.

 

LO2 Apply skills of critical enquiry in a literature review of the general area of specialization.

 

LO3 Demonstrate an understanding of the social relevance and potential impact of the identified issues within the area of specialisation in a way that informs both their immediate context and the wider community of practice and provides potential for further research.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
