Short Description

This course provides a study into the factors affecting, and methods informing, teaching and learning in diverse non-compulsory contexts. From higher and adult education to community and youth contexts, the course looks at the roles of space, bodies, technologies, and culture in teaching and learning. The course includes substantial practical work with inputs and assessments of methods of engagement, facilitation, instruction, and evaluation.

Assessment

The assessment consists of: 1. A 4000-word (or equivalent) written Teaching and Learning Log documenting key elements of teaching and learning explored, experienced, and critically considered throughout the course. Entries will be based on selected topics covered in the course in conjunction with course readings, professional contexts, practical experience, and self-evaluation (Weighting: 70%). 2. A group teaching presentation in a specified context from a range of educational contexts including HE, FE, community spaces, youth groups, digital spaces, and public pedagogy (Weighting: 30%).

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

 

■ Explore influencing fields including cultural studies, embodiment studies, spatial theories, and digital studies in education

■ Investigate and evaluate a range of methods and practices of teaching, facilitation, instruction, and evaluation

■ Engage in critical exploration of practices of pedagogy

■ Gain experience related to contemporary learning contexts in a chosen area of specialisation

■ Develop interdisciplinary and critical skills for students to examine educational practices in contemporary diverse contexts

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

■ Critically analyse prominent and pertinent practices of teaching and learning in diverse contexts

■ Demonstrate context relevant pedagogical practice

■ Analyse how these approaches relate to and inform practice and policy

■ Design a pedagogical framework and methods appropriate to a specified context

■ Present ideas critically, clearly and coherently in appropriate academic style, developing well-structured arguments, and observing the disciplines of writing and presentation

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment. Students must complete all components of the assessment.
