Short Description

This course introduces students to theories of space, place and psychogeography in relation to community development practice.

5 sessions of 4 hour inputs

Requirements of Entry

Completion of level 2, or equivalent.

Assessment

1. The students will undertake a derive within a community space. The assignment will critically analyse the social processes with regard to course theory. The students will produce a 2000 word assignment (70%).

2. The students will work in groups to produce a short film, no longer than 10 minutes, portraying a public space: an intervention in that space; and the consequent impacts (30%).

Course Aims

To enable students to become familiar with, and understand, theories of space and place in relation to community development practice.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

The student will be able to:

1 Critically evaluate spatial theories and psychogeography relevant to community development

2 Critically analyse the relevance of spatial theories within community development practice and policy

3 Apply methods of psychogeography in practice

4 Present work according to academic conventions
