Short Description

This course enables students to build on previous theoretical knowledge in developing the capacity to critique and analyse new theoretical traditions in relation to Community Empowerment and its relevance to community development.

Requirements of Entry

Completion of level 1, or equivalent (including those students who have entered directly into year 2 with appropriate qualifications)

Assessment

1. Group Poster Presentation: (50%)

2. Students must write a 1000-word essay (50%)

Course Aims

This course explores theories and approaches that enable a critical approach to tackling oppression and discrimination.  

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

The student will be able to:

1.  Critique and analyse a range of theories relevant to community empowerment within the field of community development

2.  Demonstrate an understanding of approaches and methods to respond to oppression and discrimination

3.  Take a reflective and informed approach to their critical praxis

4.  Present work according to academic conventions.
