Short Description

Providing a knowledge base of common oral diseases, their diagnosis and their management. Building a strong knowledge base in the aetiology, diagnosis and management of oral cancer.

Course Aims

Acquisition and integration of a knowledge base of common oral diseases, their diagnosis and their management Acquisition and integration of a knowledge base in the aetiology, diagnosis and management of oral cancer.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Diagnose pathological conditions affecting the mucosal surface of the oral cavity.

2. Critically discuss the need for and the interpretation of different diagnostic aids in oral mucosal disease.

3. Critically discuss the importance of a multidisciplinary approach towards the diagnosis and management of orofacial pain.

4. Identify and utilise the diagnostic aids used in oral cancer.

5. Describe the classification and staging of head and neck malignancy.

6. Critically compare the treatment and palliation techniques used in oral cancer.

7. Critically evaluate importance of a team approach to care in oral cancer.

8. Critically evaluate contemporary methods of maxillofacial reconstruction after cancer ablation.

9. Identify the serious complications that may follow on the management of oral cancer patients.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
