Short Description

This course looks at the medieval Celtic peoples in the period from c.400-1066AD. The course studies the art and literature of the Celts, and looks at the movements and developments in Britain and Ireland in the period after 400AD which led to the establishment of the historical Celtic kingdoms.

Assessment

Two Worksheets to be completed via the Moodle 'quiz' activity (20%);

Essay (1,700 words) - 30%

Examination: (90 minute duration) (50%).

Course Aims

This course will provide the opportunity to:

■ provide a coherent picture of salient aspects of the history, societies and culture of the Celtic peoples 400-1200 AD;

■ enable students to understand and use critically the source materials available for study of this period.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ Describe in written argument the movements and developments in Britain and Ireland in the period after 400 AD which led to the establishment of the historical Celtic kingdoms

■ Describe in written argument the linguistic and cultural affinities of the Celtic peoples of Britain, Ireland and Brittany in the early middle ages

■ Discuss in written argument the spread of Christianity among the Celtic peoples and its role in society

■ Describe in written argument the forms, functions and variety of Celtic art, and Celtic literature in the early middle ages

■ Identify key facts and details relating to the course subject matter

■ Critically analyse in written and seminar contexts the various primary source materials relating to the course subject matter

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
