Short Description

This course introduces core operations management concepts, and then develops students' knowledge of key areas of operations, including understanding operations management objectives, design of operations, operations planning and control, supply chain management, the role of technology in operations and their management. Students are introduced to key tools, theories and frameworks that can help to underpin the analysis of operations and their management.

Timetable

The course will be delivered on a blended mode that includes a series of seminars, workshops and active learning experiences over 35 hours in Semester 1. Some asynchronous activities will be in place as preparation for practical sessions and discssions.

Are reassessment opportunities available for all summative assessments? No

Reassessments are normally available for all courses, except those which contribute to the Honours classification. Where, exceptionally, reassessment on Honours courses is required to satisfy professional/accreditation requirements, only the overall course grade achieved at the first attempt will contribute to the Honours classification. For non-Honours courses, students are offered reassessment in all or any of the components of assessment if the satisfactory (threshold) grade for the overall course is not achieved at the first attempt. This is normally grade D3 for undergraduate students and grade C3 for postgraduate students. Exceptionally it may not be possible to offer reassessment of some coursework items, in which case the mark achieved at the first attempt will be counted towards the final course grade. Any such exceptions for this course are described below. 

 

The group poster cannot be reassessed.

Course Aims

This course aims to develop an understanding of how organizations manage operations to create value. It will introduce students to key terminology, tools, frameworks and concepts that managers can use to understand, develop and improve operations at different levels (from individual processes through to interorganizational networks).

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate how operations and their management contribute to the creation of value in organisations;

2. Analyse processes both within and between organizations, identifying key components of a process and showing how different elements and stakeholders in the process interact;

3. Evaluate how organisations' operations performance objectives influence the design of operations to deliver goods and/or services;

4. Collaborate in groups to select and convey information concisely and in a visually appealing way.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
