Short Description

It is essential for laboratory managers in the laboratory environment to ensure that they, and the laboratory personnel who they manage, strictly follow and adhere to: (i) recognised standards and procedures to ensure the quality of data and other outputs, including products and services, that are generated from the laboratory; (ii) ethical and legal regulations that govern practice, especially when working with animal or patient material and data and (iii) standards of professionalism. During this course, students will develop knowledge and understanding of these areas and how they can be implemented and managed effectively.

Assessment

Written Assignment - Audit report (ILO 1,2) (2000 words) (50%)

Written Assignment - Event analysis of a significant incident, including reflection (2000 words) (ILO 1,2,3,4) (50%)

 

Note

Students who wish to obtain academic, industrial or clinical specialisms will complete their assessments with a relevant topic pertaining to the chosen specialist environment.

Course Aims

1. Ensure students acquire a critical comprehension of key elements related to laboratory practice, governance, and ethics, for example: recognised standards of good laboratory practice to ensure robust data collection; legislation relating to the use of human and animal tissues; data protection issues.

2. Provide students with knowledge and understanding of procedures and required standards for generating, reporting and publishing output from the laboratory environment.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Interpret and effectively implement legal and ethical requirements in the laboratory environment.

2. Critically evaluate procedures and requirements for recognised standards of laboratory practice and quality control relating to the validity, precision, accuracy, production, reporting and publication of outputs from the laboratory environment.

3. Critically assess the role of regulatory bodies and their importance within the laboratory environment.

4. Critically evaluate the impact of / response to the actions and conduct of themselves and other personnel in the laboratory environment.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
